Simple DIY All Natural Skincare Routine

Acne is NO fun!!

As a teenager, I thought that it was just my hormones and that I would grow out of it.  In my twenties, it progressed to painful, cystic acne and in my thirties it continued to worsen.  I honestly kept thinking that I would eventually find the perfect beauty brand, birth control pill, or prescription/supplement that would heal my skin.  I was desperate for a solution, and did not realize that I was only damaging my body and skin more with all of the chemicals and toxins in these products.

After seeing a functional medicine physician for other medical reasons, I discovered that the main cause of my acne was most likely related to my gut health, the toxic overload on my body, and because of this, hormone imbalances.

This is when I decided it was time to give my health and skincare regimen a complete overhaul!

Cystic acne is NOT something you cure topically.  You really have to dig a little deeper to find the underlying cause.  However, it is vitally important that you do not add to your toxic load with all of the chemicals found in most skincare products on the market.  Especially products claiming to help eliminate acne.  Most of these products use really harsh chemicals that add to the inflammation in your body.

If you are struggling with cystic acne, I would encourage you to the read these posts on how to balance your hormones and how to heal your body from the inside out. For now though, let’s focus on taking your skin care back to the basics.

I have found that this simple routine, using just a few natural ingredients, has really helped to improve my skin’s texture and appearance!  It helps to heal the cysts quicker, and I have found that I don’t have nearly the amount of scarring and redness!

My Simple DIY All-Natural Skin Care Regimen

CLEANSING

I wash my face every morning and evening with this DIY All Natural Acne Fighting Cleanser.  It is a gentle cleanser that is effective at cleaning makeup and dirt, but will not strip your skin of its natural oils.

DETOXIFYING & EXFOLIATING

It is important to clear away dead skin so that the essential oils and other nourishing ingredients can really be beneficial. I use this Detoxifying Charcoal Mask at least once a week. It really works to draw impurities and toxins from your skin helping with blackheads and breakouts.

TONING

Witch hazel is a natural astringent that helps control acne by reducing inflammation and decreasing oil.  It helps to balance your pH level, reduces the look of pores, and helps to heal scars and scabs.

If you have sensitive skin you can choose to get unscented, but I personally love this rose petal witch hazel.  It smells amazing and is so refreshing!

I apply it with a cotton pad after cleansing morning and night.

MOISTURIZING

This is going to sound CRAZY considering I have tried everything in my power to eliminate oily skin, but I use this DIY All Natural Facial Oil for Acne as my moisturizer.  It uses jojoba oil as its base which actually regulates oil production. This blend not only leaves my skin feeling great, it has helps to eliminate scarring.  In the beginning, I also used this DIY All Natural Acne Scar Treatment to help heal the cysts and fade the scars and dark spots.

SPOT TREATMENT

When I get a blemish now, I soak a cotton pad with witch hazel and hold it on the area for a couple of minutes. I then apply a drop of Lavender oil directly to the spot. Most essential oils have to be diluted, but this one is safe to apply directly to your skin.

This system has totally been a game changer for me!  All of the recipes are really simple and are very affordable to make. The ingredients serve many purposes, so you will be able to use them for other remedies and recipes found throughout this site.
