Simple Acne Fighting Detox Mask with Charcoal & Clay

by | Jun 12, 2017

After more than 20 years of fighting cystic acne, and finally finding an effective and simple skincare regimen, I am very passionate about helping others achieve clear skin!

This simple DIY face mask is one of my favorite methods for preventing and combatting blackheads and acne.  It also helps to purify and detox your skin as well.  I personally use this mask twice a week while taking a relaxing detox bath.

So what makes this mask so beneficial?

Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is commonly used as an antidote as it absorbs toxins, poisons, and chemicals before they can harm your body.  It is used in emergency situations when people have ingested poisonous substances.

It works great topically because it acts like a magnet drawing dirt and impurities from your pores.  It helps to tighten pores, smooth skin, and it also works to reduce inflammation.

Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is a mineral-rich healing clay composed of ash from volcanoes. It has been used for centuries to promote health and prevent disease by attracting, trapping, and removing toxins from the body.

When hydrated, bentonite clay carries a strong negative charge. When applied to the skin, it bonds to things with a positive charge like heavy metals, bacteria and impurities. It absorbs toxins, draws out dirt that causes blackheads, and kills the bacteria that causes acne.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is a potent antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal substance capable of keeping bacteria at bay and pimples from forming.  It also helps to balance your skin’s pH, minimize wrinkles, and remove toxins.

ACV takes some getting used to.  If the smell is too strong, you can substitute with water, but the essential oils help mask the vinegar.

Essential oils

Essential oils are a helpful addition for DIY skincare recipes.  This recipe uses lavender oil which helps to soothe and nourish your skin, treating acne and reducing the appearance of dark spots and scars caused by acne.  It also uses tea tree oil (melaleuca) for it’s antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties.

DIY Acne Fighting Detox Mask

  1. Combine all ingredients making sure to use a glass bowl and wooden spoon.  Some of the ingredients can pull toxins from metal and plastic.  If it is too thick, add a little more water.
  2. Wash face with a mild cleanser, and carefully apply your mask making sure to avoid your eyes.
  3. Let mask sit for 5-20 minutes, and wash off with a warm cloth.
  4. Follow with a toner and nourishing moisturizer or facial oil.

It is normal for your skin to feel like it is tightening as the mask dries.  If your skin begins to feel itchy or uncomfortable, remove the mask immediately.

Please note that activated charcoal has a tendency to stain.  Make sure to avoid getting it on your clothes, and quickly clean off of your sink.

This mask can be tough to get off.  I lay a warm washcloth over my face and let it soften the mask before I start trying to rinse it off.  I suggest using an old one as it will be permanently stained.

A quick note on Detoxing…

Detoxing isn’t just a one time thing.  Because we are introduced to toxins on a daily basis, it’s a good idea to have a simple ongoing practice of detoxing our bodies.

Some good practices for healthy skin and an ongoing detox regimen include:

  • Drink lots of water and eat real food.
  • Use a simple all natural skincare routine and ALWAYS wash your face at night before bed.
  • Detox your skin once a week with this mask and a take a detox bath.
  • Use a DIY detox oil blend or body cream to help pull toxins from cellulite.
